DesChamp and Jackson 20' (6.1m) Skiff
This skiff is
somewhat typical of the small open workboats that are the inshore workhorses of
Atlantic Canada and the Northeast U.S. Used for rockweed harvesting, lobster
and handline fisheries and for ferrying people and supplies to islands, they're
able to carry large loads with relatively small outboards. The spray rail makes
the design different from most. Even when heavily loaded, the spray rails allow
boats like this to plane at quite hight speeds.
This skiff was
commissioned by Roland DesChamp of
DesChamp and Jackson Boatbuildersand the female
mould has just been finished and moved to their new shop in Shelburne, NS. The
fine, deep entrance, flat run, good sized spray rails, and high sides should
make for a handy and dry boat with a good turn of speed and excellent load
carrying abilities. Fitted with a small wheelhouse and cuddy, this would make
an excellent year-round workboat or family weekender.
